Tell us about yourself & the shoes that you customized:

My name is Emma Atterbury and I am an artist/illustrator born and based out of the San Francisco Bay Area in California. With the shoes I customized, I wanted to represent a lot of the motifs I use in my brand and personal works which are skeletons, desert landscapes, text, and spooky things. I chose the all white viva mondo creepers because the black on white takes me back to just doodling on my white sketchbook pages with black ink.

Who or what is your biggest inspiration?

Music is and will always be a big inspiration for me as I think it holds a lot of vulnerability which is something that I want to always put fourth in my work.

What do you want people to take away from your art?

I want people to feel seen when they interact with my artwork. A lot of the work I create is driven by personal experiences and thoughts so I want people to understand with a lot of the hard things we go through in life we are not alone in

What's your biggest accomplishment within your career?

I think as of this moment, the biggest accomplishment of my career has been creating and maintaining my own path as a full-time female artist. All the things they say about doing something you love and you'll never work a day in your life are completely ludicrous because I've never worked harder at something before. Every project, personal or with others has been so fulfilling though.

What piece of yours is your all-time favorite and why?

My illustration "Definitely Matters" is at the top of my favorites that I've made. It is of a skeleton sitting up on some rocks near a cactus that looks out on a desert vista and reads "it definitely matters, but also definitely doesn't." I made this piece with a lot of the anxieties of life in mind to really drive the idea that insignificant things can matter and sometimes the big stuff doesn't matter. I also put a shorten version of this text on my customized T.U.K.s since it is one of my Favorites.
